Tubular vase in glazed earthenware, with a midnight blue glaze. The belly is adorned with vine tendrils, on which two pairs of swallows in high relief are placed on the rim of the base and lip. The birds, covered with a finely crackled light beige-brown enamel, stand out sharply against the deep blue background.

A rare testament to Auguste Jean's later production, this vase reinterprets his emblematic deep blue glaze while profoundly renewing the treatment of the decoration. It is no longer just painted: the birds, modeled in relief, introduce a sculptural dimension. Judiciously placed on the prominent parts of the vase, they interact with its form and with the plant motif of the tendrils, giving the whole a character that is both decorative and plastic.

Condition: Some chips and losses. Old restorations: one of the birds, in particular, has been reshaped.

Signature: Signed beneath the piece "A Jean".
