Vase in enameled earthenware with a yellow glaze, adorned with a polychrome decoration of vine shoots and blue flowers, amidst which are a leaping feline, probably a leopard, and two birds resembling pelicans. The neck, left in plain yellow, is highlighted by a blue rim that echoes the small circular foot and the flowers in the decoration. The flattened shape of the body provides a surface suitable for the painted decoration, here a very personal interpretation of a dreamed exoticism, in which decoration takes precedence over naturalistic representation.
A rare example of a yellow-ground vase in Auguste Jean’s production, of which only two vases are currently known, this work stands out from the blue-ground pieces that contributed to the artist's recognition.
Condition: Well preserved.
Signature: Signed under the piece "AJ Jean."
