An important flat, four-footed gourd-shaped vase in translucent smoked glass of a grey hue. Numerous hot-worked elements include the four pinched feet and the neck, which has an irregular lip with a distinctly organic character.
The body features a rich polychrome enamelled decoration enhanced with gold, of Japanese inspiration, composed of naturalist floral and vegetal motifs arranged in a scattered pattern — reeds, peonies, cherry blossoms, and irises — animated, on one side, by a portrait of a young Japanese woman in traditional costume holding a fan, inscribed within a rectangular cartouche. The shoulders are adorned with a more orientalist decoration of scrollwork, interlacings, and stylised floral motifs.
The many iridescent effects of the material, the applications of gilding, and the extreme finesse of execution give this work a particularly precious and decorative character.
