Pair of small footed vases, in metallic crackled smoked glass, brown in color for the body and blue for the base. Lacking any painted enamel decoration, the ornamentation resides entirely in the crackled effects and metallization of the smoked glass, in the Venetian tradition of "vetro a ghiaccio", as well as in the chromatic contrast between the body and the base.
Through the technique used, combining smoked glass, crackling, and metallization, for which no other known work by Auguste Jean to date seems to offer an equivalent, this pair of vases attests to the technical research conducted by the artist in the field of glass art.
Their acquisition in 1882, during Auguste Jean's lifetime and directly from the artist, for the collections of the Musée des Arts et Métiers (CNAM), underscores the interest shown in this creation from the moment of its completion.
