Pair of enameled earthenware vases with a deep blue glaze, adorned on each of their main sides with polychrome painted decoration. A quatrefoil medallion features a classical portrait of an ancient man or woman, depicted in three-quarter view against a yellow background with small crosses. The rim, also painted yellow, highlights the opening of the vases, while each rests on a circular gilded bronze base.
With their deep blue glaze, polychrome decoration, and Renaissance-inspired ornamental vocabulary, these vases are a particularly representative example of the production that contributed to Auguste Jean's renown.
Condition: Good state of preservation.
Signature: Signed on the reverse, under the vase, in blue enamel: “Jean AJ”.
