_

Set of enameled faience presented by Auguste Jean at his stand during the Universal Exhibition of London in 1862, reproduced in The Art Journal illustrated Catalogue of the International Exhibition, 1862.

The set brings together vases of various forms declined in neo-antique and neo-Renaissance styles, testifying to the artist's early productions. Among the works represented, none are currently localized. The large neo-Renaissance vase placed at the top center is also reproduced by J.B. Waring in Masterpieces of Industrial Art and Sculpture at the International Exhibition, 1862 and appears in the photograph of Auguste Jean taken by Adolphe Dallemagne, the only known photographic representation of the artist to date.

This publication thus constitutes a valuable testimony to Auguste Jean's production at the beginning of his career. The first universal exhibition in which he participated, London marked an important step in his recognition: his work received a particularly favorable reception there, both in the French and British press.
