Set of enamelled earthenware presented by Auguste Jean on his stand at the London World's Fair in 1862, reproduced by J. B. Waring in Masterpieces of Industrial Art and Sculpture at the International Exhibition 1862, published in 1863.
The set brings together vases of various shapes in neo-antique, neo-Renaissance, neo-Gothic, and Orientalist styles, reflecting the eclecticism that characterized the artist's production at the time. Among the works represented, only the vase with palm tree decoration is currently located. The large neo-Renaissance vase in the foreground is also reproduced in The Art Journal illustrated Catalogue of the International Exhibition 1862, while this vase and the small vase in the background on the right appear in the photograph of Auguste Jean taken by Adolphe Dallemagne, the only known photographic representation of the artist to date.
This plate thus constitutes a valuable testimony to Auguste Jean's production at the beginning of his career. London, the first World's Fair in which he participated, marked an important stage in his recognition: his work received a particularly favorable reception there, both in the French and British press.
Condition: Unlocated set, with the exception of the palm tree vase.
