Circular pedestal bowl in enamelled earthenware with a deep blue glaze, adorned with a polychrome painted decoration depicting a putto among foliate scrolls, in a Neo-Renaissance vocabulary. These elements make this bowl a particularly representative example of the production that contributed to the renown of Auguste Jean.

Its painted decoration bears strong similarities to that of a deep dish reproduced in The Art Journal Illustrated Catalogue of the International Exhibition of 1862, among the works presented by Auguste Jean at the London International Exhibition that same year. Two other bowls and two other matching plates with this same painted decoration are also known. These comparisons suggest that the artist here reused and adapted a motif already employed, testifying to the reuse and variation of some of his models on different forms.

Condition: Good condition.

Signature: Signed, under the piece, in blue enamel: "AJ Jean".
