Small hemispherical footed bowl, in glazed earthenware with a blue glaze. The exterior of the bowl is entirely covered in this blue glaze, while the interior features a polychrome painted enamel decoration, in shades of brown, yellow, and green. It consists of a network of interlaced stylized floral and plant motifs, forming an ornamental composition inspired by Oriental art and described as "Persian" at the time of its acquisition.
Unique in the work of Auguste Jean known to date, this bowl reveals a lesser-known facet of the artist's production. Moving away from his famous blue-ground Neo-Renaissance style earthenware, it testifies to his interest in Orientalism, which was inspiring many French ceramists at the time. Like Théodore Deck or Eugène Collinot, Auguste Jean was part of the eclectic movement that revitalized French artistic earthenware in the second half of the 19th century.
Acquired in 1882, during the lifetime of Auguste Jean and directly from the artist, for the collections of the Musée des Arts et Métiers (CNAM), this bowl also bears witness to the interest shown in his research and creations as soon as they were made.
