Centerpiece in enameled earthenware depicting an ox hitched to a plow, rendered in blue and white monochrome in the style of Delftware. The plow, with its sinuous forms and ornaments inspired by the rocaille style, serves as a support for several marine scenes featuring sailboats. The combination of a pastoral subject and maritime landscape decoration blends naturalist motifs with rocaille ornamental vocabulary.
This centerpiece serves as evidence of Auguste Jean's blue and white productions in the Delft style. It is also of particular interest due to its late dating: created in Vierzon, it bears witness to the artist’s ceramic production during the final years of his career.
Condition: Good state of preservation.
Signature: Signed on the reverse, under the base, in blue enamel: “JA/V”.
