Tambourine-shaped flower holder in glazed earthenware, decorated with a blue and white camaïeu in the Delft style. The pastoral scene depicts a woman sitting by the water, while two birds flutter around her, drawn by the food she appears to be offering them. In the background of this peaceful and bucolic landscape, a church can be seen.
Intended to hold and display bouquets or flowering stems, the flower holder is both a functional and decorative object, designed to help adorn interiors. This model was meant to be wall-mounted.
A rare example of Auguste Jean’s blue and white earthenware in the Delft style, this piece is all the more interesting as only two of the artist’s flower holders are currently known. Furthermore, it serves as a particularly late testament to his ceramic production, having been made in Vierzon, where Auguste Jean worked during the final years of his life.
Condition: Well preserved.
Signature: Signed on the reverse, under the base, in blue enamel: “JA/V”.
