Important flattened quadripod gourd-shaped vase, made of translucent smoked glass of a grey hue. Numerous hot-worked elements include the four pinched feet and the neck featuring an irregular lip with a distinctly organic character.
The body is adorned with a rich polychrome enameled decoration enhanced with gold, of Japoniste inspiration, composed of naturalistic floral and vegetal motifs arranged in a scattered pattern — reeds, peonies, cherry blossoms, and irises — animated, on one side, by a portrait of a young Japanese woman in traditional costume holding a fan, enclosed within a rectangular cartouche. The shoulders are decorated with a more Orientalizing design of rinceaux, interlaces, and stylized floral motifs.
The numerous iridescent effects of the material, the gilding applications, and the extreme delicacy of execution give this work a particularly precious and decorative character.
