Circular deep plate in enamelled earthenware with a deep blue glaze, adorned with polychrome painted decoration depicting a putto amidst leafy scrolls, in a Neo-Renaissance vocabulary. These elements make this dish a particularly representative example of the production that contributed to the renown of Auguste Jean.
Its painted decor shows strong similarities to that of a deep dish reproduced in The Art Journal Illustrated Catalogue of the International Exhibition of 1862, among the works presented by Auguste Jean at the London International Exhibition that same year. Two other plates with this same painted decoration are also known, as well as a pedestaled bowl. These comparisons suggest that the artist reused and adapted a motif already employed here, demonstrating the repurposing and variation of some of his models on different forms.
Condition: Good condition. Some chips.
Signature: Signed on the reverse, in blue enamel: "AJ Jean".
