The reverse features a marbled design.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis bowl is part of the \u003cstrong\u003eNeo-Palissy movement\u003c\/strong\u003e, which experienced a significant revival in the 19th century centered on the rediscovery of the work of \u003cstrong\u003eBernard Palissy (c. 1510-1590)\u003c\/strong\u003e. Its form and decoration appear to replicate a bowl model attributed to Palissy, known in the 19th century by the names \u003cem\u003e\"colander\"\u003c\/em\u003e or \u003cem\u003e\"plate of a thousand flowers,\"\u003c\/em\u003e and widely reproduced by his followers. This type of model notably inspired \u003cstrong\u003eGeorges Pull (1810-1889)\u003c\/strong\u003e, one of the leading representatives of the Neo-Palissy movement.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile Auguste Jean is using an antique model here, which he may have known through its reproduction in \u003cem\u003eL’Art pour tous\u003c\/em\u003e, the encyclopedia of industrial and decorative art published under the direction of Émile Reiber on May 30, 1870, he distinguishes it through the use of \u003cstrong\u003emetallic effects\u003c\/strong\u003e. \u003cstrong\u003eFar from a simple historicist pastiche\u003c\/strong\u003e, he \u003cstrong\u003ereinterprets\u003c\/strong\u003e a frequently reproduced model by applying his own research into surface treatment effects.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis work testifies both to Auguste Jean's interest in historical sources and to his research into the \u003cstrong\u003emetallization of ceramics\u003c\/strong\u003e, to which the processes he developed and for which he filed a \u003cstrong\u003epatent in 1889\u003c\/strong\u003e are related.
